What not to do with a large orange sofa

What not to do with a large orange sofaWhen I first started this site I wasn’t sure if I should let out my inner ‘meany’ when it comes to interior design.

Where do I have the right to tell someone that something is simply awful? I saw this picture a week ago on Modelit and I have been debating with myself since, whether I should post it and tear the whole thing apart, or keep my opinion to myself.

My mean side won.

It’s not that the sofa by Cheateau d’Ax is awful - which it is in that European sort of way - but that the room they put to show off the sofa just scary. That lamp? OMG, that lamp!

The orange sofas match the orange lamp, match the orange base of the floor vase, match the orange lines through the rug, match the orange tchochkes on the table.

It’s like someone puked an orange factory and here is the result. I hate the shape of the sofas, but undoubtedly they are comfortable - ugly sofas always are. G-d only knows why.

What not to do with a large orange sofaThis, on the other hand, is a room by Conran and while it’s not actually a room to live in it is a better example of how to mix pieces. Yes, they have orange in the carpet - but it isn’t the exact same shade. And note, there isn’t any more orange in the room.

This is an example of what to do.

  1. I dovka love the orange sofa. As you said, it looks comfortable, and the room looks warm. A few changes might make it really nice.
Aside from that, like your site.

  2. I knew this would be a controversal post, which is why I wasn’t sure I should do it.

It’s not the color I don’t like - it’s the shape. I know it’s a classic European style. I do think that with softer accessories and more subtle pieces in the room that it could look nice. It’s just too much orange matchy matchy for me.

Hope you didn’t take my tyrade too seriously, I can assure you it wasn’t meant to be taken that way - and thanks for visiting!

  3. I just moved and I have an orange modern sofa and hardwood floors..walls are off white..any more suggestions? I like earthy, exotic. Thanks!

If you send me a jpg to my email I can give you a list of suggestions. (It’s a lot easier to suggest when you have a visual)

Otherwise, if you like earthy and exotic I would consider a kilim rug in the same tones as your sofa, some pillows, Morrocan side tables with some modern lamps to keep the mix of modern and ethnic. Depending on the size of the space you could add a glass top coffee table (make sure the glass is thick) and some ethnic tchochkes.
