Store Review: Studio Mesila – Unbelievably Green!

by Shelly Sharron on October 2, 2009

It’s amazing, ever since I decided I want to write about green design I have discovered a whole new world. There are stores opening up all over the place recycling anything you can think of into things you never dreamt of. It’s so inspiring to find so many designers out there turning trash into treasure. This week, I discovered a group of 3 designers Ifat Zvirin, Shlomit and Avital Levy that together are Studio Mesila. The name comes from the street that their store is on, Mesilat Wolfson in Florentine. Their designs are simple, elegant, beautiful and did I mention recycled? Here’s an view of the store:

They create sustainable designs and urge people to lead a more balanced lifestyle where consumerism is concerned, if you’re going to buy more stuff, at least buy something that has been recycled. Their work is between 30%-100% recycled. Each piece is one of a kind, although you may find some similar pieces, no two are alike.

Aside from the reduction of waste, their idea is to use everyday objects in new and exciting ways that will surprise you. Like this door table for instance:

Recycled Door TableHere’s a coffee table also made of old doors, quite beautiful and surprising to think that such a beautiful and elegant coffee table could be made out of a door that someone threw out:

Coffee table made from DoorsThis recycled crate table appeals to my loft-style, I love it and it comes in a square format as well, can’t help loving the big wheels:

Recycled tapestry and railroad sleeper coffee tableEnough with the coffee tables and onto the lamps. The lamps are brilliant, IMHO. There are these made of recycled wood veneer (I WANT! I WANT!):

And these equally awesome lampshades with old buttons sewn onto the shade! Here’s that surprising element coming into action.

It seems that almost everything can be re-used in some way or another. If you don’t know how, find someone who does and give it to them. It seems there are quite a few people out there who know how to turn things that seem useless and ready for the rubbish dump into gold.

I love the legs of the table – and if it didn’t have that weird thing in the middle I would like the table as well.
