Home Tour: Francis House in Jerusalem

by Shira Abel Shvo on October 5, 2009

Architect Pe’era Goldman has worked with her client (a lawyer for non-profits) to create an absolutely stunning space. I fell in love with this apartment from the moment the door was opened.

Ok, admittedly the first thing I noticed was the handsome face with amazing blue eyes and sandy blond hair of the owner as he opened the door – I am human after all (and of course I checked, being the Jewish mother that I am… ladies, he’s not married).

I love these stairs – the design allows for the stairs to take up a narrower space at a harder angle than a normal set of stairs. Not child friendly, mind you – but upstairs is only a loft bedroom and a bathroom – so babies don’t need to go up.

This home is one of the many fantastic spaces I saw during theĀ Houses from Within – Jerusalem tour a few weeks ago. I’ll be featuring apartments and homes from the tour for the next few weeks.

Francis House was one of the few which had a set amount of visitors allowed with limited tours. I went about an hour before it was set to open and knocked (praying that someone was home), showed my media pass (thank you Aviva!) and asked if I could come in before the throng arrived. I’m so glad I did – I got some wonderful pictures and didn’t have to fight the masses to take them!

main_bedroom

The main bedroom was simple, and rather low to the ground. The carpets in the whole house were to-die-for, but, as usual – disappointing bed. Notice the books on every surface – just wait…

I think the furnishings in the bedroom were so space in order to focus on the view.

The office…

also had a lot of books, and pictures and tchochkes and whatnot. The bookshelves in this home make the space.

I love bookshelves. Built in no less. You can never have enough…

working_desk

This desk is lovely – I especially like it paired with the uber-modern chair.

living_room_entrance

The main living area is open plan.

living_room

The living room and kitchen have high vaulted ceilings and carpets that define the space. Notice the built-in bookshelves? There’s even more in the kitchen.

kitchen

See? And those bookshelves are full as well by the way. They all are in this home.

I love the little sitting niche between the kitchen island and main counter. What a great place for friends to hang out drinking some wine (or milk, what have you) while you are preparing the meal. One thing I did notice was missing, however, was an actual dining table. I guess that gives a great excuse why he can’t entertain the whole family.

upstairs_loft

The upstairs loft is spare, but has a seriously amazing bathroom.

bath_from_balcony

I took this photo from out on the balcony. There’s glass doors and a high balcony wall (so no one can see you nekkid) and you can lie in the bath and look up to an open sky. I just loved that.

I was debating only putting some of the pictures on this post and the rest on our Flickr page (click here to see) – what do you think?

Stunning house. Love the wood and the paintings in the entrance. Love the books too.

Amazing home. Does not look “decorated,” rather cozy and homey.
Would love a source on the rimon, pardes, lech leca pictures.

I love the stairs. Especially since I’m looking into redoing my son’s stairs to his loft. And the drafting table is a great blast from the past!
