Historical homes: The Atwood House

by Patti Boker Elkon on September 15, 2009

I am still catching up with the summer that I left behind.  In August I had the pleasure of visiting The Atwood House, a historical destination nestled in the quaint town of Chatham on the peninsula of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

I am grateful for the historical societies that preserve these quickly evaporating landmarks.  This small traditional country home was a splendor in its day.

This model shows the original home and the property.  The long house and the connecting building on the right are no longer standing.  The entire house was also moved beck on the property by 200 feet to make room for the ever expanding Main Street.

The dining room was immediately to the right upon entry.  back in those times a visitor was welcomed into the home through the dining room and not allowed to enter the rest of the house until they were invited back as return guests.

This china cabinet situated in the dining room was filled with traditional Blue Willow and Brown Ware very popular at that time.

This is the master bedroom.  The photo below shows the one-of-a-kind indoors outhouse.  This affluent family had it all including a few children that were responsible for changing the buckets in the toilet daily… I am pretty sure that my daughter would have not taken part in this chore!

Here is the second bedroom.  The mattress sits on a bed of rope which was tightened each night with the wooden tool displayed on the bed cover hence giving heed to the saying “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”.

Close up of the quilt.  Handmade quilts were not only decorative but functional.

The babies room was adorned with whimsical stencils.  This child had their own potty chair at their disposal, a true luxury.
