Dalia and David Zomer’s House

In continuing with the Houses from Within tours,  I saw this house which is typical of a pioneering Jewish style that was built in the nineteenth century  outside the old city walls of Jerusalem.

Dalia and David have lived here for forty years. Their house has been preserved in its original state. It demonstrates Maghrabi neighbourhood‘s construction style and lifestyle during its first few years.

Above you see the gorgeous floor tile work where the owners have created an office above their dining area. How clever! and it keeps you fit as well.

piano

Next I went into the living room and wondered how they managed to get this piano into the house. All the doors and windows are so narrow.

I love these old shutters and thick walls.  Good ideas for heat and cool conservation.

I really like the clerestory windows above the windows and doors. It’s a great way to bring natural light into an area. I placed glass block above the wall into my powder room and at times there’s no need for electrical lights.

Cats rule this place.

They even have their own tiled landing.

Most amazing was the Zomer’s kitchen. Look at the size of stones on the left wall and the ceiling height. It turns out that in those days their bulk goods (sugar, flour, etc) were stored in their attic. And as Dalia put it they weren’t afraid of a little exercise by climbing up (opening in front of window) for their supplies.

This is the original oven  in which they still bake. The stone floor is the original “counter top” on which they rolled out dough.

Beautiful wall hangings throughout the house.

Books in every room including the bedroom.

This lovely pattern is Damascus tile in the bedroom.

I love those old Jerusalem houses. They just don’t make them like that anymore. Beautiful home.

Love the stone wall in this house! It reminds me of some places I have stayed in Spain.
