Color Tip of the Week: Pattern mixing

by Patti Boker Elkon on February 21, 2010

We live in a “pattern saturated world”, one that allows us to pick and choose, mix and match and add a bit of personality to every room.  Patterns are alive in so many formats.  from wallpaper to textured floor coverings the world is our oyster when it comes to adding pattern to our homes.

There are some basic rules which can sometimes be defied.  For instance, large patterns can work in a small space and can actually enhance the rooms proportions.

Tips:

1)  Go ahead, mix and match, plaids paired with stripes make a powerful statement.

2)  Coordinate patterns with color. Mixing a floral with an animal print can work as long as the colors match.

3)  Use neutral accents to breakup groups of pattern.  Giving the eye a resting point in a pattern saturated room can be a breath of fresh air.

4)  Match the scale of the pattern to the object it will  enhance.  Big furniture is graced most by medium size patterns while small ones benefit from smaller motifs.

My Kind of design. Loved the colors, furniture designs and fullness of fabric at window and bedding.
