The ugly sofa

June 12th, 2008 Patti Boker Elkon Posted in design, furniture, sofas 6 Comments »

I came across these sofas from Milano bedding that are quite expensive and I think pretty darn ugly.  This company not only boasts style but also ultimate comfort.  I searched and searched for the comfort aspect on their website and I could not come up with anything to show.  The price tags starting at 9,000 and up to 40,000 NIS are not in the bargain shopper range to say the least.  I even think that IKEA has some comprable sofas for half the price.

Ouch, this sofa looks sooo uncomfortable.  I would not last long sitting here.

It looks like they left the down comforter on the sofa… Where is the style here?

Oh, that’s where I left my yellow sleeping bag!

This sofa had possibilities but I think you can find a similar one at IKEA.

I almost thought this one was nice but then I noticed that they forgot to iron the skirt.  The crinkle thing just does not work for me.

Not only is the couch boring and uncomfortable looking, the room setting is horrible.  Are those square covered in the same fabric as the couch, yikes!

Feeling guilty about the ‘What not to do’ post

January 9th, 2008 Shira Abel Shvo Posted in living room, sofas No Comments »

img243-1434-cve2ib4m3r Feeling guilty about the What not to do postI’m feeling guilty about yesterdays post regarding what not to do with an orange sofa. Someone wrote in stating that they liked the sofa (which actually made me really happy - it’s always nice to know people are reading the posts and not just looking at the pics.)

I wanted to make good to Modelit, and show a few things from their website that I actually liked (or at least didn’t find an affront.)

The living room to the left is a tad bland color-wise, but the neutral tones are not offensive in anyway and the sofas look very comfy.

The pool sofa below is just yummy. I love the lime green accent pillows.

What not to do with a large orange sofa

January 8th, 2008 Shira Abel Shvo Posted in living room, sofas 4 Comments »

ugly_orange What not to do with a large orange sofaWhen I first started this site I wasn’t sure if I should let out my inner ‘meany’ when it comes to interior design.

Where do I have the right to tell someone that something is simply awful? I saw this picture a week ago on Modelit and I have been debating with myself since, whether I should post it and tear the whole thing apart, or keep my opinion to myself.

My mean side won.

It’s not that the sofa by Cheateau d’Ax is awful - which it is in that European sort of way - but that the room they put to show off the sofa just scary. That lamp? OMG, that lamp!

The orange sofas match the orange lamp, match the orange base of the floor vase, match the orange lines through the rug, match the orange tchochkes on the table.

It’s like someone puked an orange factory and here is the result. I hate the shape of the sofas, but undoubtedly they are comfortable - ugly sofas always are. G-d only knows why.

conran What not to do with a large orange sofaThis, on the other hand, is a room by Conran and while it’s not actually a room to live in it is a better example of how to mix pieces. Yes, they have orange in the carpet - but it isn’t the exact same shade. And note, there isn’t any more orange in the room.

This is an example of what to do.

Penthouse Furniture - store review

January 6th, 2008 Shira Abel Shvo Posted in sofas, store review No Comments »

wingback_arm_chair_leather Penthouse Furniture - store reviewPenthouse Furniture (not related to the magazine of the same name) carries sexy well-made furniture imported from around the world.

Their style varies from the old world grandeur of leather wingback armchairs and chesterfield sofas to modern ethnic.
About a year ago I stopped by the store when I was looking for sofas. They had fantastic oversized slipcovered sofas which could have taken over my entire living room. If only.
chesterfield_sofa_in_room Penthouse Furniture - store reviewI love their pieces, and I have to say I don’t think the dressing in either of these photos does their products justice.

The store has many oversized and heavy pieces, but using them in a mix, instead of having the entire room look like a dull geek vampire den (vampires have more style than this) is the way to go. This furniture should be contrasted with lighter pieces and some color. I would have put the chesterfield with a colored wall (probably a light sage green) and an antique Turkish carpet with a red background.
If that is too much color for you then an eggshell white wall with a cream cashmere blanket on the sofa and an ivory carpet. And a different lamp. I don’t like that squat lamp.

Penthouse Furniture is located in Gaash shopping area (they are in the furniture area in the far corner close to the freeway).

Diran

1112007Shamal-leather Diran Mmmmmmm… leather.

Diran is a store with some truly incredible things (and they have an English website.)

Look at the foot end of this bed. Is it just me? Or is it missing a leg? How cool is that? (Yes, I am easily amused.)

Pink contrasting trim, making an otherwise nondescript sofa into something much more.
